ROBEY PORTABLE ENGINE No. 41005, 12 HP SC Portable Class A.

The Robey Portable was discovered in early MARCH 2013 by Jon Godfrey. She was reluctantly being auctioned off by the owner, and was stored in a quarry in Somerset. We were successful in bidding for the engine, and she was eventually acquired and brought to Derby on 14th March 2013.
After some research and advice from Dave Davies at the Robey Trust, Jon managed to find a serial number on the engine which enabled Dave to identify her.She is Engine No. 41005, 12 Horse Power Single Cylinder Portable Class A. Manufacturers Order No.30112 and was delivered on 9th June 1923 to the firm of Astell Bros of Bristol. Grateful thanks to Dave & The Robey Trust for his help on this and other matters.
The Robey is in relatively good condition, but needs a new smokebox, firebox, re-tubing, and major repairs to the chimney casting. Many of the components require repair or replacement, but restoration is progressing well. As is always the case with heritage preservation, the huge cost of repairs is the only limiting factor. For example, the costs involved in repairing the chimney casting alone are estimated to be over four thousand pounds! Can you help us to get her back in steam by buying something from our shop, or making a donation?
Weighing an impressive 12 Tons, she is our largest and most expensive item currently under restoration.
